Free Running Tracks in Brooklyn

Where to do track work in Brooklyn, starting with the quarter mile track at McCarren Park, plus what to know before you go.

A track takes the guesswork out of speed work. A lap is a lap, the surface is even, and nobody steps off a curb in front of you mid rep.

McCarren Park track

McCarren Park, on the Greenpoint and Williamsburg border, has a rubberized quarter mile track in the area of Lorimer Street, Driggs Avenue and Bayard Street. NYC Parks renovated it in 2018 and it reopened in late January 2019. Check the NYC Parks page for McCarren Park for current hours before you plan a session.

Icahn Stadium on Randall's Island is also open to the public when it is not booked for meets or programs. Check the Randall's Island schedule first.

Track etiquette that keeps you out of trouble

  • Run your fast reps in the inside lanes and step out when you stop.
  • Recover on the outside, and look before you cross.
  • Change direction on the day the track posts it, if it posts one. Running the same direction every session loads the same side of the body.

If your shins or Achilles complain after the first few track sessions, that is the classic sign of too much too soon. The Injury Clinic covers both.
