The Riegelmann Boardwalk runs from West 37th Street in Coney Island to Brighton 15th Street in Brighton Beach. The landmark designation gives it 2.7 miles, so an out and back is a little over 5.
Why I like it for runners
The boards give more than pavement, and the boardwalk is wide, between 50 and 80 feet, so even on a busy day there is room. It is flat, which makes it a good place for an easy run or steady miles before a race.
When to go
Summer afternoons belong to the beach crowd. Early mornings and the off season are when it works as a running route. Wind off the water is the main thing to plan for: start into it and let it help you home.
Check before you go
The city has announced a large rebuild of the boardwalk. Expect sections to close while the work runs, and check NYC Parks before a long run.
Flat and soft does not mean injury proof. Long, unchanging runs at the same pace are a common way to wake up a sore Achilles or plantar fascia. The Injury Clinic explains both.
