Racing the NYCRUNS Brooklyn Experience Half

From North Brooklyn to Prospect Park, under three bridges. The half where I ran 1:39 in April 2023, and how to run it well.

Runners racing beneath the Manhattan Bridge on the Brooklyn waterfront

The NYCRUNS Brooklyn Experience Half is 13.1 miles from North Brooklyn to Prospect Park, and it's where I ran my best half: 1:39 in April 2023, 11th of 226 in men 50 to 54. The next one is Sunday 25 April 2027. Here is how to run it well.

The course

It starts up in North Brooklyn near McCarren Park, on the Greenpoint and Williamsburg line, and runs the waterfront with Manhattan across the river. You pass under the Williamsburg, Manhattan, and Brooklyn bridges, roll through DUMBO and Downtown Brooklyn, then head inland and finish inside Prospect Park. Point to point, mostly flat, with some of the best skyline views of any race in the city. Check the organizer and the race calendar for this year's date.

Why it's a PR course

The early waterfront miles feel easy with the crowd and the views, so start at goal pace and no faster. Hold it through the middle miles and save something for the pull inland. That is how I ran 1:39 here.

The part that bites

It's honest, but it isn't dead flat the whole way. As you leave the waterfront and climb gently toward Prospect Heights and the park, the free speed disappears. Don't panic when it does. Keep your cadence, ease the effort a touch, and let your legs come back on the way into the finish.

Treat the start like a big race

Plan for a crowd: get there early, line up by your honest pace, and pack for a point to point finish far from where you started. The race day checklist covers the rest.
